The deeper you dig the rarer the items you find and the more dangerous the monsters (and the rarer the items they drop). Dig out the bottom of a lake and the water will flow out the bottom along with you, as the physics of the game world follows a perfect kind of 2D logic. Although you might not always have the right tool for the job the whole of Terraria’s world is completely destructible, whether you’re digging out iron ore from the ground or chopping down trees to use as fuel and platforms. Instead you must go digging for your own excitement, quite literally. Especially as there still isn’t any real story, and certainly no traditional sign-posting. In theory it should also mean a more accessible game, but even with a new console-only tutorial it takes a perilously long time for Terraria to reveal its true nature and depth.
